D-1242IMPROVED H-COAL PROCESS AND PLANT DESIGNABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA process for converting coal and other hydrocarbonaceousmaterials into useful and more valuable liquid products. Theprocess comprises: feeding coal and/or other hydrocarbon-aceous materials with a hydrogen-containing gas into anebullated catalyst bed reactor; passing the reaction productsfrom the reactor to a hot separator where the vaporous anddistillate products are separated from the residuals;introducing the vaporous and distillate products from theseparator directly into a hydrotreater where they are furtherhydrogenated; passing the residuals from the separatorsuccessively through flash vessels at reduced pressures wheredistillates are flashed off and combined with the vaporousand distillate products to be hydrogenated; transferring theunseparated residuals to a solids concentrating and removalmeans to remove a substantial portion of solids therefrom andrecycling the remaining residual oil to the reactor; andpassing the hydrogenated vaporous and distillate products toan atmospheric fractionator where the combined products arefractionated into separate valuable liquid products. Thehydrogen-containing gas is generated from sources within theprocess.
