SKIN PREPARATION DEVICE AND METHOD FORTHE APPLICATION OF MEDICAL ELECTRODESAbstractA method and device are disclosed for preparingthe skin of a patient to ensure good electrical contactbetween a medical monitoring electrode and the plaintiff'sskin relative to a reference electrode secured to an alreadyprepared site on the skin of the patient. The electrodeincludes an abrasive pad impregnated with an electrolyte forproviding good electrical contact with the patient's skin.When a monitoring electrode is used, the abrasive pad issecured to the skin and is rotatably driven by a preparationdevice which continuously measures the impedance between thepad of the electrode and a reference electrode secured to aprepared site on the skin. Rotation of the pad of theelectrode terminates within a predetermined period or whenthe impedance between the pad and reference electrode fallsto a predetermined value, whichever occurs first.
