The invention provides compounds of the general formulawherein X is -Cl, Br or -OCH₂CH₃, and the preparation thereof. One such compound, 1-bromoethyl ethyl carbonate, is useful as an esterification agent, e.g. for penicillins, and the other such compounds are intermediates in its preparation. The manufacture of formulations containing 1 '-ethoxycarbonyloxy ethyl esters of penicillins is included in the invention.;There are also provided novel compounds of the formulain which Ph is phenyl and R is CH₃- or C₂H₆-.
