The invention relates to a method and device for opening, axially gathering and separating tubular casing material (70, 128), in particular artificial casings for sausage production, for tubular caterpillars (78, 136) and for subsequent transfer thereof to a further processing point, in particular the filling tube (14, 138) of a sausage filling machine (10), the shirring being carried out by advancing the tubular casing material against lifting means (56, 132, 156, 178, 184). According to the invention, these are brought into effect only after the start of the feed movement at a location located at a distance behind the start of the hose and then moved back in the gathering direction in accordance with the increase in length of the caterpillar. The separated tubular caterpillars (78, 136) are fed to the further processing point by reversing the movement of the stop means (56, 132, 156, 178, 184) in the opposite direction. This leaves an unruched section (76) which allows the front end of the track to be easily worn for further processing on the filling machine.
