Waste discharge device of the radioactive waste storage containers

Radioactive waste is removed from a container by a truck which is driven towards an open end of the container. The truck carries claws which are able to close on the waste and then open to release the waste. The claws are operated by a first cylinder and can be tilted downwards by a second cylinder. A detector between the truck and the claws senses the pressure when the claws penetrate the waste. Signals from the detector stop the movement of the truck and also cause closure of the claws. The system is used to remove e.g. rags, paper and clothes, used in a nuclear power station from a storage can before burning. The waste is removed safely and automatically without exposing personnel to radiation.
