Carboxylic acid ester is prepd. from isobutyl fluoride (I) by esterifying a mixt. comprising (I) and less than the amt. of alcohol required to esterify the entire (I) in the mixt. to a carboxylic ester (II) under anhydrous conditions in which (II) is formed. The esterification is effected at 20-150C and 1-340 bars in the presence of the anhydrous hydrofluoric acid, the latter being used in an initial amt. of 0.01-95.5 wt.% to 99.09-4.5 wt.% (I). The alcohol is a 1-2C primary or secondary alcohol. The process is specifically for the prepn. of methyl(meth)acrylate.
