During the desulphurisation of molten crude iron in aladle, a slag rich in CaO is produced which normally has a high iron content. The high iron content is avoided by adding a small amount of finely milled fluorspar, the amount being insufficient to cause liquefaction of the slag. The fluorspar is injected into the molten iron, the amount being 0.05-1.5 Kg of fluorspar per tonne of molten iron. The invention minimises manufacturing costs in the production of iron and steel by avoiding the loss of iron in the desulphurising slag. The amount of slag adhering to the wall of the ladle is also reduced.
