The control of a number of input and output units, e.g. card readers, punches, displays etc., in a computer control system is effected by a memory data store coupled over a multiplexer to peripheral group control circuits. A channel control unit (1) of a computer transmits data from a memory using decoder circuits for selection. Output or input data is transmitted over a multichannel multiplexer (7). In particular sometime are used for bidirectional transmission of data and addresses. Other times relate to established functions relating to peripherals e.g. status, partly, interrupts etc. Requests for peripheral communication are made over control circuits coupled the multiplexer output. Output lines from the control units (20) carry data, addresses and control signal for the peripherals.
