In the continuous treatment of a moving fabric web, partic. knit goods for garment manufacturing, the edges of the fabric are first spread out. After the fabric edges have been unrolled, and the fabric spread out, the material is exposed to steam for a short time span in a bell-shaped air-free steaming chamber, before passing on for further processing. The curcled edges of the fabric are spread out by using rollers or compressed air jets. The spread fabric has a dwell time of 2-60 seconds in the steam chamber, which has an internal temperature of 95-98 degrees C, and is fitted with a perforated carrier to support the fabric as it passes through. The process stabilises the unrolled edges of the fabric so that the material remains fully spread while passing into the further treatment zone.
