A two-stage process for the gasification of domestic and industrial refuse and low-grade coal with a high inert content uses a temp. of 450-700 deg. C in the first stage. The pyrolysis reactor is pref. designed as a drum with an oscillatory motion. The semi-coke produced is charged in the second stage into a gasifier for treatment at 1100 deg. C. The low-temp. carbonisation gas from the first stage is injected in the lower third of the gasifier as a purging medium. This saves any subsequent elaborate gas purificn. processes and supplies valuable gas for firing power station boilers or for district heating.
