The wet multi-disc friction brake has spring-loaded pressure plates forming pistons and sliding towards a fixed supporting flange. A main disc is keyed to the rotary drive shaft, with one or more intermediate discs alongside the main one. On both sides of the main disc (2) are intermediate discs (4,5) rotating freely. The main disc can be of material such that, or have surfaces shaped so that, there is a greater coefficient of friction between it and the intermediate discs than between the latter and the stationary pressure plates (1) or supporting flange (6).
