A central station has at least one signalling line (ML) to which one or a number of detectors (M) are connected in a chain. During the cyclic interrogation of the detectors (M), a timing section (T1), which can be influenced by the detector measurement value, is started at a time characteristic of the detector address. During the running time of the associated timing section (T1), control commands for a particular detector (M) on the line (ML) can be generated and received by the relevant detector (M). The control command is used as switch-over command and is evaluated in the detector. During this process, the timing section (T1) is switched from the measurement transducer (MW) to an identification transmitter (R3/R4) and the detector identification, which influences the timing section (T1), is transmitted to the central station with a subsequent interrogation cycle. The switch-over time is set by means of a second timing section (T2) which activates the change-over switch (US). The identification transmitter is formed by a voltage divider (R3/R4), the dividing ratio of which is set as detector identification for the relevant detector. IMAGE
