To locate leaks in the cooling system of metallurgical furnaces, the gas entrained in the coolant outflow line (21) is collected in the vessel (1), in which a measuring instrument connected to a limit signal emitter (4) for the liquid level in the vessel (1) has descended below a level measurable by the fitted measuring instrument, a signal is triggered which indicates the presence of gas. The defective cooling element is localised by checking the individual cooling zones one after the other. The device used consists of the easily exchangeable vessel (1) with preferably an electrode (3) and further known measuring instruments and also a quieting zone (25) in the outflow line. IMAGE
