To locate leaks in the cooling system of metallurgical furnaces, the gas entrained in the coolant outflow line (21) is collected in the vessel (1), in which a measuring instrument connected to a limit signal emitter (4) for the liquid level in the vessel (1) has descended below a level measurable by the fitted measuring instrument, a signal is triggered which indicates the presence of gas. The defective cooling element is localised by checking the individual cooling zones one after the other.
