The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of high-grade steels which are premelted in the converter, and has the object of reducing the combustion of iron in the converter, reducing the cost of refractories and to facilitate the metallurgical work to be carried out subsequently in the ladle. According to the invention, the steel is, after the decarburisation, dephosphorised in the converter only to an insignificant extent or not at all and is then poured, at a temperature essentially established after the combustion of the carbon, into the heatable ladle furnace, into which dephosphorising agents are then blown in a manner known per se.
