To produce wear-resistant surfaces, at least on the top ring groove of aluminium-alloy pistons for internal combustion engines, arc welding is used by virtue of the fact that, to reduce the manufacturing cost and without increasing the weight of the piston, a groove is in each case cut into the piston blank in the area of the top ring groove and is filled with a filler material in which the ring groove is cut, which filler material is made of an aluminium alloy containing silicium.
