To enable mud and sludge to be deposited independently of the hitherto necessary depositing sites and to also achieve the aim of dumping according to volume-reducing treatment methods, the dredged material is classified for separating its sand portion from the silt-particle and clay-particle fraction as well as from the organic sludge portion. The sand portion is discharged directly for utilisation or dumping. The silt-particle/clay-particle and sludge fraction is mechanically dewatered and removed. To carry out this method a floating dredger is used which is provided with a device for transferring the dredged material to a classifier. Immediate transfer of the separated sand fraction into separate transport systems can be carried out by a transport device, and transfer of the silt-particle/clay-particle and sludge fraction to a mechanical dewatering station can be carried out by a further transport device.
