The signal to be investigated is converted into a delta-modulated signal, and the number of signal changes of the delta-modulation signal, which have occurred within a predetermined time interval, are counted. From this it is possible easily to distinguish, for example, between the muzzle blast and the impact blast of a gun or projectile. To equalise different signal intensities, a normalisation to the maximum signal within the time interval is effected in that first an analog/digital conversion and storage of the input signal and determination of the maximum value is carried out. The stored values are then divided by the maximum value and the quotients are compared with the delta-modulated signal integrated in a counter. A separate normalisation and separate counting of the signal changes can also be carried out in several successive time intervals, and the individual counts are processed jointly. IMAGE
