A process for carrying out microbiological conversions in continuously charged fermenters in a cascade arrangement is described and entails the biomass being continuously removed at each stage in the cascade and being fed in countercurrent to the substrate to another stage in the cascade, with the biomass removed from the first stage in the cascade being returned to the last stage in the cascade.
