In rotatingly driven rolling heads (4), there are rotatably mounted rollers (5) which revolve in the manner of planets as the rolling heads revolve and exert a hammering action on the workpiece (W) in such a way that, as the diameter is reduced, material is displaced principally in the direction of the axis (A) of the workpiece. During this process, the workpiece is at least rotated (this is, for example, sufficient for necking down) and, in general, is also moved along the axis (W) of the workpiece. The rolling heads can be adjusted in and out for necking or other changes in diameter. IMAGE
