An organophosphorus complexing agent for use in an electroless transition metal plating bath and having the formula IMAGE wherein R1 is alkyl having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, or IMAGE wherein R2 is IMAGE R3 is selected from the class consisting of R2 and -CH2CH2OH, R4 is selected from the group consisting of R2, -CH2CH2OH, and IMAGE each M being independently H, NH4 or alkali metal, and n is an integer from 1 to 6 inclusive. The invention also provides baths including at least one of these agents and which as a result can be formulated to operate effectively at any pH within a wide range, and by any one of a number of reduction reaction mechanisms.
