Workpieces are assembled on a platform which is mounted on a horizontal pivot shaft; and a motor and gears are used to tilt the platform so the workpieces can be moved at a desired speed below a welding burner provided with automatic controls, e.g. for MIGwelding.Theburnerisfittedwithsensorrollerstravelling along the curved surface of a workpiece to maintain the burner at a constant distance from the seam. The burner is mounted on a slide driven vertically along a carrier by a motor; and the carrier is mounted on the end of a horizontal jib. The jib can be driven horizontally on a vertical pillar mounted on a wagon. The burner can be driven along any desired path to make welds with complex shapes.
