Hot rolling of radial flange on revolving metal tube - uses first roller to maintain bore with second normal roller pushing metal onto counter rolls

The hot roll forms an external radial flange on the axial extremity of a rotating round hollow section metal blank (12), used in the fabrication of engine housings. A roller (5) shapes the hot metal into a radial bulge while another (6) maintains the bore face, and the bulge is then flattened with a roller (9) providing axial and radial counter thrust. Radially expandable segments (11) are applied to the lower bore zone to effect calibration and centring, and the flange is finished by burnishing at the annealing temperature. The rollers may be manipulated by an elevator beam slide (3), with a roller mounted on a radial ram (8) operated second slide (7).
