Conversion of particulate coal (or other solid fuel) to liq. and gaseous products is carried out by (a) drying the coal in contact with a heat carrier comprising recycled particulate coke; (b) subjecting the coal/coke mixt. ot pyrolysis in 2 stages and recycling part of the coke to step (a); (c) heating the rest of the coke to 800-1500 deg.C. by contact with hot gaes and/or by partial combustion; and (d) steam-gasifying the hot coke and recycling residual coke to the 1st pyrolysis stage. The process is stated to have a thermal efficiency of 84-88% and to give high yields of high-quality products (pyrolysis gas, liq. hydrocarbons and water gas).
