Prepn. of 2:amino 5:nitro benzophenone(s) - by reaction of 4:nitro benzanilide with benzoyl halide and hydrolysis

2-amino-5-nitro benzophenone derivs. of formula (I) (where X= H or halogen), are prepd. by treatment of a 4-nitro benzanilide (II) with a benzoyl halide (II) in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, followed by acid hydrolysis. The pref. Lewis acid is zinc chloride and the preferred hydrolysis medium is a mixt. of acetic acid, sulphuric acid and water. (I) is an intermediate for medicaments such as nitrazepam, chlorazepam, flunitrazepam and 2-benzoyl-4-nitro glycylanilides. This process gives good yields of pure prod. and is simple to carry out.
