Tri:methyl-hydrazinium-propionate betaine - useful as animal growth promoter and plant growth regulator

3-(2,2,2-Trimethylhydrazinium)propionate of formula Me3+NNHCH2CH2COO-.2H2O (I) X-.Me3+NCH2CH2COOR (II) is new. (I) is prepd. by passing a soln. of a salt of formula (II) (where X is Cl, Br, I or MeSO4 and R is lower alkyl), pref. in H2O, MeOH or EtOH, through a column of strongly basic anion exchanger, and isolating (I) from the effluent. (I) is useful as (i) an animal growth promoteR, e.g. giving an 8-24% increase in daily wt. gain and a 7-15% increase in feed utilisation efficiency in cattle and poultry, and (ii) a plant growth regulator, e.g. giving a 10-15% increase in cereal halum dia. and a 15-30% increase in yield.
