Fluid cooled disc brake heavy lorry - uses U=section drum containing two divergent rings on splined shaft and fluid pipes are cast into rings

The compact disc brake is suitable for heavy lorries, using fluid flowing through built-in pipes (11,12) to dissipate the heat produced by braking. A fixed circular casing (1) has a 'U' section with brake pads (4,5) mounted on the internal annular faces of flanges (2,3). This casing contains an axially diverging pair of cast brake rings (9,10), and is mounted co-axially about a wheel axle (A). A drum (6) is also mounted (7) on an axle (A), using splines (8) to prevent the rotation of rings (9,10) whilst permitting their sliding in the axial sense. One ring (10) is mounted on a jacking-ring (13) with piston (17)- cylinder (15) assemblies set at 120 degree intervals. Pipes (11,12) are cast into rings to subtend almost 360 degrees of arc and project fer jointing to flexible lines (18).
