The mattress is covered by a single layer of spongy material which forms two longitudinally extended cells. The top and bottom surfaces of the cover are folded (14) longitudinally along the line dividing the two separately spring halves. The bottoms of the grooves formed by the folds are joined by a band (15) which stretches across the centre of the mattress. The band is elastic across the depth of the mattress and is joined to the folds by a row of longitudinal stitching which passes through both sides of each fold.
