Novel vanadium complexes of the oxo or dioxo type of the general formula IMAGE in which V denotes vanadium, O is a dianionic oxygen atom which is linked to the vanadium metal in the oxo or dioxo manner, and Z represents an anion or a monoanionic, monodentate or multidentate group, while L and L', which can be identical or different, denote a monodentate or multidentate, electron-supplying ligand; n and m are identical or different and in each case denote 0 or 1 or 2, p is equal to 1 or 2, or is an intermediate number between 1 and 2 such that an equilibrium exists between the two forms p = 1 and p = 2 in accordance with the equation (1) defined in the description. The invention also relates to the preparation and use of the novel complexes for converting unsaturated hydrocarbons, in particular for oxidising olefins.
