Electromagnetic type pump for liq. metal and other conducting media transportation in, e.g. atomic power stations, is arranged so that the choice of the pumping channel length section of the iron housing provides a sharp increase in the pressure therein together with high efficiency of the pump without resorting to a complicated design and enlarged overall pump size. The length (l) of the section (6) defining the pumping channel in the iron housing (1) is expressed as l is greater than or equal to 2 sq.rt.2/sigma. mu omega, where sigma is the electrical conductivity of the pumped medium, mu is the magnetic permeability of the pumped medium, and omega is the angular frequency of the a.c. source for feeding the excitation winding.
