The invention relates to new therapeutically valuable derivatives of 2-(2-thienyl)-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridines of the general formula IMAGE (I) in which R is methyl or ethyl, R1 is hydrogen or methyl and R2 is methylthio, methylsulfinyl oder methoxy, and their pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts, which compounds possess pharmacological properties, especially a positively inotropic activity on the heart.
