PURPOSE:To infiltrate surely lead into a green compact at a high rate of filling by coating the compact with a kneaded material consisting of lead powder and water glass, removing water from the material by drying, and sintering the compact. CONSTITUTION:Water glass is kneaded with 10-50wt% lead powder. The top of a green compact of metallic powder is coated with the kneaded material, and water is removed from the material by drying. The compact is then sintered by a conventional method to melt the lead powder and to infiltrate it into the porous compact. The residual component of the sodium silicate on the top of the sintered body is removed by polishing or other method. This method is applicable to the manufacture of a wear resistant sintered body suitable for use as a valve seat of an engine or the like.
