PURPOSE:To provide a protective coating agent which can prevent staining or rusting when applied to the surfaces of structural parts and can be stripped together with stains deposited on the surfaces thereof, containing a synthetic resin soluble in a lower alcohol solvent or a mixture thereof as the main ingredient. CONSTITUTION:A protective coating compsn. contains a synthetic resin soluble in a 1-10C lower alcohol solvent or a mixture thereof as the main ingredient synthetic resins having a degree of polymn. such that a soln. contg. 20-25% resin has a viscosity of 50-500cP at 25 deg.C, can be used. Examples of such resins are polyvinyl butyral, and there are particularly preferred modified polyurethane and modified polyvinyl acetate which are modified to introduce hydroxyl groups so as to make them soluble in the lower alcohol solvent. Ethanol and isopropyl alcohol are preferred as the alcohol solvent from the viewpoing of safety of Rumans. Usually, the compsn. contains 5-50wt% synthetic resin and 50-93wt% lower alcohol solvent.
