PURPOSE:To infer and cut defective parts at the front end and rear end of the slab with high accuracy in blooming the ingot by the universal mill, basing on the portion of terminal of slab crop overlap inferred by a specific formula. CONSTITUTION:When an ingot is rolled into a slab by a universal mill, the rear end of the slab is cut at the terminal of overlap P as there is no segregation in original ingot. Since there is segregation in original ingot at the front end of the slab, cutting is made at further inside, by g, from the terminal P of overlap to remove defective part. In this case, the position of q can easily and accurately be inferred in reference to the position of P basing on actual relation hitherto obtained with the amount of rolling reduction. Accordingly, by detemining the position of P accurately, the front end and rear end of the slab can be cut with a high yield. The position of P (front end and rear end of the slab and the length L of the position of overlap) is determined by the formula I and the rear end of the slab is cut at that position and front end is cut at the position further inside by q.
