PRODUCTION OF SYNTHETIC POLYVINYL ALCOHOL RESIN

PURPOSE:To obtain a synthetic polyvinyl alcohol resin advantageously, by utilizing, as a material for producing vinyl acetate, methyl acetate which is produced as a by-product in the production of a synthetic polyvinyl alcohol resin from a vinyl acetate polymer; CONSTITUTION:Methyl acetate produced as a by-product in the production of a synthetic polyvinyl alcohol resin by saponifying a vinyl acetate polymer in the presence of methyl alcohol is carbonylated with carbon monoxide to from acetic anhydride. The produced acetic anhydride together with acetic acid and oxygen is fed to a vapor phase reaction zone to produce vinyl acetate, which is then (co)polymerized to produce a vinyl acetate polymer. This polymer is saponified in the presence of methyl alcohol to produce a synthetic polyvinyl alcohol resin and at the same time by-product methyl acetate is used in synthesizing acetic anhydride.
