1488379 Rivets I E ROSMAN 3 Oct 1974 43009/74 Heading F2H A high strength rivet 1 has a solid circular section shank 3 with a head 4 at one end and an upsettable tubular portion 5 at the other end, the tubular portion 5 housing at its inner end a core pin or plug 2 of a material having a compression strength at least as great as that of the main rivet material, the base 54 of the tubular portion 5 interior being positioned so that it will not lie outside a workpiece 10 when the rivet 1 is installed in workpieces 9, 10 at its minimum grip length g 2 . The plug 2 may be cylindrical, Figs. 1, 3, and may have an annular groove (46) about its periphery (Fig. 7, not shown). Alternatively, a plug 60, Fig. 11, having a cylindrical portion 61 and a tapered portion 62 may be used. Such a plug may have a cylindrical extension (78) (Fig. 12, not shown) from the smaller end of the tapered portion. The rivet shank 3 may be an interference fit in the hole 8 through the workpiece. Preferably the plug 2 may be pressed axially by a sprung central portion 13 of a riveting tool during the latter part of the setting operation, to radially expand the rivet shank 3 to induce or increase an interference fit of the shank in the hole 8. The head formed by setting the tubular end portion 5 of the rivet has a diameter at least 1,3 times that of the shank 3.
