The present invention relates to two benzotrifluoride compounds which can be used as chemical intermediates for a new class of 2-haloacetanilide herbicides (I) and a process for the manufacture of these intermediates. The process generally involves nitration and reduction of a corresponding benzotrifluoride, where R is a methyl or ethyl group.
