This softening composition comprises (i) separate softener particles containing at least about 75% by weight of a smectite-type clay, and less than about 5% by weight of anionic detergent surfactants, not ionic, ampholytic or zwitterionic; and (ii) a cationic compound chosen from primary, secondary and tertiary amines and their water-soluble salts, diamine and diammonium salts, and quaternary ammonium, phosphonium and sulfonium compounds, almost all of the cationic compound being adsorbed on the surface of the particles.
