The guard for a planing machine comprises a gantry above the tool on the machine table and with a coupling mechanism to the machine frame. The gantry has a lifting vane at the end furthest from the guide, and a lug and the end adjacent to the latter, the lug being inclined to the guide in a horizontal plane. - A workpiece to be planed and inserted between lug and guide thrusts the gantry away from the guide, allowing it to pass through.
