摘要

An improved 1-step process for preparing a thixotropic overbased calcium sulfonate complex in the form of a grease or thickened composition comprises forming a liquid mixture containing a liquid carrier material in the form of a volatile liquid hydrocarbon or a nonvolatile oil or a mixture thereof; a sulfonic acid having or including an aliphatic chain containing at least 12 carbon atoms and having a molecular weight in the range of about 300 to about 700; calcium oxide and/or calcium hydroxide; a member selected from the group of C1-C4 water-soluble aliphatic alcohols and water-soluble alkoxyalkanols; a water-soluble carboxylic acid; and water; agitating and heating said mixture to a temperature in the range of about 95 to about 200 DEG F and carbonating said mixture for a period of time to effect between about 80% and 100% of completion of carbonation whereby to produce a grease or thickened composition in which the reaction mixture is changed to a grease or a thickened composition containing colloidally dispersed particles of calcium carbonate which is produced in the form of calcite crystals.
