The aim of the invention is to determine the plastic deformability of ceramic materials so that they can be mutually compared and to determine the optimum deformation parameters. The object of the invention is to provide a piston compression system which makes it possible to determine the variation in the degree and pattern of deformation with respect to distance and time. According to the invention, a vertically swivellable frame is mounted on a cabinet-type stand. In its turn, the frame carries a hydraulic test cylinder which interacts with the test cylinder via interlocking linking elements. The test cylinder has a fixed piston having a central nozzle-type outlet for material. The test cylinder piston rod is provided with a groove-type, longitudinally directed recess for receiving the strand of material. The test cylinder can be driven optionally at constant speed or constant pressure by means of working cylinders via a pressurised hydraulic system. Applications of the invention are in the ceramic industry and in powder metallurgy. IMAGE
