The softening effect of softening detergents containing non-ionic surfactant and a cationic quaternary ammonium compound as a softener is improved, in particular at raised washing temperatures of at least about 60 DEG C, if a highly ethoxylated non-ionic surfactant having a cloud point temperature above the raised washing temperature is used. The preferred non-ionic surfactants are the C12-C14-fatty alcohols and C8-9-alkylphenols ethoxylated with 15 to 30 mol of ethylene oxide. The cloud point of the composition can be raised by incorporation of an amphoteric surfactant in the composition.
