Fastening device for sausage skins not only serves to seal the envelope but provides a suspending loop which supports the sausage during the conventional smoking treatment. Plastic 'U' pieces from a magazine, are pushed forward by a piston around the gathered folds of the sausage skin. These have a separate piece supplied by a distributing device on the other side with hollowed ends which fit over the matching projecting portions of the two branches of the 'U' and, after being forced into position, are welded by an ultrasonic method. The device ties the skins effectively and quickly. The welding around the constriction zone strengthens the grip of the suspending loop and prevents the sausages from falling from their supports during the smoking process. No string is required for tying. The device is well adapted for use in an automatic fastening method. A suitable plastic, that can be welded, is nylon.
