Microorganisms are bound to the surface of solid particles used as fillers in reactor columns by the addn. of cationic poly-electrolytes during the inocculation process, in prepn. for the of the microorganisms in chemical processes, esp. in the biological denitrification of water. - The excess microorganism growth appearing on the particles is eliminated by impulse exchange treatment followed by vacuum filtration or gas blowing and opt. aq. washing. The microorganism covered particles are subsequently returned to the pref. fluid bed by gas pressure or by gravity.
