The demetallisation of residual oils before catalytic conversion is carried out by contacting the oil at high temp. and pressure, in the presence of H2, with a catalyst comprising one or more metals with hydrogenating activity on a support, the catalyst satisfying the following requirements: (1) p/d 3.5-0.02v, where p is the specific av. pore dia.
