The milk is pumped (2) from the static tank to the vehicle tank via an air separator (16) valve (4) and flowmeter (3). The electromagnetically operated (23) top-off value (4) is controlled by a microprocessor (6). The sample milk flows from a nozzle (7) into a sample vessel (12) or via a funnel (8) into a waste reservoir (10). The nozzle swivel mechanism (11) sample lid lifter (14) and a bar code reader (15) are all controlled by the processor (6). The sample consists of a large number of samll samples taken at intervals during the pumping operating, the pipe being flushed into the reservoir (10) between samples.
