The waterside guard comprises a bent plate joining onto the solid ground of the bank and a bottom surface facing downwards at the water level. Between where the plate (7) joins onto the solid ground (1) and its surface towards the underside it has a first ridge (9) above the wster level, a valley (10) below the latter (3) and a further ridge (11) above it. There can be openings (15,16) in the valley portion for water to flow through. On the land side of the first ridge and the water side of the second there can be an edge extending vertically downwards.
