The operating procedure is intended for a continuous installation for firing ceramic prods. such as an annular or zig-zag furnace comprising a series of progressively interconnectable chambers (e,f,g, etc.) including combustion gas chambers (e,f,etc.) and one or more buffer chambers (g etc.) contg. unfired prods. The connection between the buffer chamber (g) and the adjoining gas chamber (f) and possibly to the buffer chamber next in line is initially sealed by paper until that chamber (g) itself is connected to replace the chamber (f). During the waiting time, cold air leaking into the chamber (g) from outside leaks into the chamber (f). During this waiting time, hot gas and/or air is introduced (e.g. 25,22,23,22,26,11,34) into the chamber (g) such that the cold air leaking therefrom into the adjoining chamber (f) is partly or wholly replaced by the warmer gas and/or air.
