The height of the molten pool of metal in an electroslag welding process is checked by a feeler which is immersed in the slag floating above the metal pool. A current is passed through the slag bath and the potential between feeler and metal bath is measured as being indicative of the bath height. - The feeler (1) is coupled to an emitter follower (2), an amplifier (3) and a supervisory display unit (4). The sliding piece (5) can be moved along the welded seam with the slag bath (7) and the metal bath (8).
