Activating a hydrocarbon hydrogenation catalyst - contg. iridium, ruthenium or rhodium in an alumina carrier

A gp. VIII noble metal having large crystalline shape and low activity which is impregnated in an alumina carrier is contacted with a gas contg. fluorine as a dispersing agent at =500 degrees C. until the large crystalline grain is pulverised to smaller particles. The activity of the noble metal catalyst is thereby raised. The noble metal is iridium, ruthenium or rhodium.
