On the masonry building, one of the main contact surfaces, which are the top and bottom ones, incorporates two ribs (24), close to the sides and extending over its whole length, with an intervening full-length cut-out (26). On the opposite main contact face there are two inwards facing surfaces (28) at the sides, also full-length, with a protruding area (30) between them. These opposing faces interlock, and match each other so as to prevent sideways block movement and assist alignment. The ribs can be roughly triangular in cross-section, with a flattened apex surface, and may incorporate a sloping outside face to form a joint gap along the sides of two superimposed blocks.
